I have an NTFS partition of Windows XP and when I try to data on my external hard drive that is larger than 4 GB of transfer, I get the message that enough free space. The hard drive is and I know that I 500gig in 300gigs less free. Who knows how the data is transmitted without problems?

Probably enough space on your hard drive. When my internal hard drive is full and I wanted to copy my files to my external hard drive I have the same message. So I had some things from the internal hard drive to do remove it.
Perhaps your external drive is formatted with FAT32
FAT32 drives can not handle files larger than 4 GB
